This design concept for the proposed renovation to the existing Our Lady of the Cedars Maronite Catholic Church in Woodmead, Johannesburg focused on the removal of the existing “Luxalon” ceiling with flourescent downlighters, which created a commercial feeling, and replacing it with a more warm and traditional timber ceiling with chandeliers and clearstory windows. This allows natural light to fill the church. The existing cry room and chapel placed on opposite sides of the church were removed and the spaces incorporated into the main church. A new choir loft is placed above the entrance to the church.
The façade of the building has been altered minimally but the existing paved walkway around the church has now been converted into a covered passageway.
