Riverclub

Accessibility

A Lebanese Mediterranean Villa, in Riverclub Johannesburg, effectively planned to accommodate a cluster home of 580m2 over two storeys. The basic idea behind the design concept was to create a rhythm of regular harmonious recurring arch windows and archways around the ground floor façade, with a main entrance covered by a projected small balcony supported by round columns with Corinthian tops and Doric bases. The double volume entrance hall has a directional flow creating easy to navigate spaces on the ground floor and directs you to the marble curved staircase taking you to the first floor containing a pyjama lounge, 4 bedrooms en-suite and a music loft. Careful detailing and beautiful craftmanship embellish the wrought iron windows, doors and staircase balustrade. Large double volume windows around the curved staircase project intricate shadows creating a powerful, direct and inspiring vision.

Commercial Office Interior, Sandton CBD

Accessibility

The proposed office interior design was greatly influenced by the curved shape of the existing building. The existing office was entered through a dark narrow passageway and had a dull monochrome interior with multiple individual office cubicles leaving a space which had very little light and was very difficult to navigate. The new design creates a friendly well-lit environment. Light from the building’s glazed façade filters through the office through the glass partitions and wrought iron balustrades which divide the spaces. A hierarchy is created through the office space by the generous nature filled pathway that begins at the reception, passes the cafeteria, open plan offices, houses a full height chandelier at its centre and culminates at the office of the CEO. The office includes: open plan office space for the general staff, shared office space to be hired out, a cafeteria with panoramic views over the Sandton CBD, boardroom facilities, a prayer room and private offices. All these factors create a warm friendly comfortable office space.

Our Lady of the Cedars – Woodmead

Accessibility

This design concept for the proposed renovation to the existing Our Lady of the Cedars Maronite Catholic Church in Woodmead, Johannesburg focused on the removal of the existing “Luxalon” ceiling with flourescent downlighters, which created a commercial feeling, and replacing it with a more warm and traditional timber ceiling with chandeliers and clearstory windows. This allows natural light to fill the church. The existing cry room and chapel placed on opposite sides of the church were removed and the spaces incorporated into the main church. A new choir loft is placed above the entrance to the church. The façade of the building has been altered minimally but the existing paved walkway around the church has now been converted into a covered passageway.

Music Hill, Tallin, Estonia

Accessibility

A Tallinn Biennalle vision competition entitled “New Habits New Beauties”  which required an urban design idea to reinvent a space in Kopli, Kalamaja, Estonia, Eastern Europe, and, in doing so, redefining the concept of beauty. Music Hill, an entry By Human Voice Architects in Association with Perception Architects, is a surmountable landscape created by upwardly extruding the site and carving downwards in curves to form three city blocks.  These are designed to respect the surrounding landscape and create courtyards which maximise the north sun. Beauty is proposed as the architectural experience by moving through the site and buildings along a ramp which meanders through the buildings, eventually arriving at a rooftop theatre with views of the old town skyline.
