Regina-Mundi

Regina Mundi is the largest Roman Catholic Church in South Africa. The Latin ‘Regina Mundi’

means “Queen of the World” and refer to the Virgin Mary. The church was built in 1961 and

official opened on the 24th of July 1962 by Johannes Baptista Montini, a cardinal of Milan.

The church has an incredibly rich history as during Apartheid it opened its doors to anti-apartheid groups and provided shelter to activists. During the 1976 riots students fled to the church to escape bullets.

The condition of the church over time has deteriorated over time.  The project comprises of three parts

The restoration and renovation of the church.

The design of a church hall, classrooms and new toilet facilities

The design and inclusion of a Museum highlighting the historical significance of the site.

The restoration and renovation of the church required careful and sensitive interventions so as to fulfil the requirements of bringing the priest and altar closer to the congregation, repair the entrance flooring and roof without losing any of the historical value.
